From the Wapakoneta Police Department:
On Friday, July 28th, 2017, at 23:59 hours, our department received a call of a burglary alarm at the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum, 500 Apollo Drive.
Entry to the Museum was discovered and taken was a solid gold replica of the 1969 Lunar Excursion Module that landed on the moon. This piece is very rare as it was presented to Neil Armstrong in Paris, France shortly after the moon landing. This piece is one of only three to exist. One was made for each of the three astronauts that completed this mission. A value of such an item cannot be determined.
This piece is 5″ high and roughly 4 3/4″ square. It was made by Cartier in Paris, France.
This case is still under investigation and the scene is still being processed.
The Wapakoneta Police Department is being assisted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
