As rumored, Johnny Depp appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday by dressing up as the network’s Moonman.

Depp appeared in a pre-recorded segment as the VMAs’ silver astronaut statue and joked that he “needed the work.” He continued to pop up throughout the show and make comments, including about having the show “get back to the music.”

It was Depp’s first public appearance since the end of his defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard.

The internet was mixed on the stunt, with some calling it “gross” and others applauding MTV for giving Depp another chance.
