The NASCAR community came together in a big way for a young fan who recently lost his battle with leukemia.
Jake Leatherman of Hickory, North Carolina, was only 5 years old but a huge racing fan who idolized Richard Petty. After he passed away, his mother, Crystal, asked a local TV anchor if she knew anyone from NASCAR who could attend Jake’s funeral.
Crystal, and the rest of Jake’s family, were incredibly moved when more than 60 members of the NASCAR community, in full uniform, showed up. The group included drivers, like Sprint Cup Series drivers Joey Logano, Matt DiBenedetto and Ryan Ellis; their pit crews and their families – who all showed up to give Jake the send-off he would have loved.
After the funeral, Crystal said, “There are no words to thank NASCAR. My husband Wayne and I are overwhelmed.”
