The owner of a Canadian fish and chips franchise was looking forward to opening up a location in Vancouver but has run into a legal snag thanks to an uptight building council.
The franchise, called Moby Dick’s, purchased a shop nearly two years ago but hasn’t been able to open because the local government office is blocking the sale over the restaurant’s name. They’re fine with Moby; it’s the other part they find offensive. The council is arguing that the name could drive people away from the area and drive down property values. The restaurant argues that the name Moby Dick is “not offensive to the public, given its literary significance and fame.”
