Yep, according to a new UC Berkeley study, simply smelling our favorite foods makes us pack on the pounds. Apparently just the smell of food triggers the brain to perceive calories coming in … regardless of whether that food makes it to your mouth. “Sensory systems play a role in metabolism. Weight gain isn’t purely a measure of the calories taken in; it’s also related to how those calories are perceived,” said senior author Andrew Dillin.
