A norovirus outbreak is quickly moving through the Olympic games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and health officials are scrambling to figure out how to stop it from spreading.
The Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 86 cases of the illness, which is known as the “winter vomiting bug.” So far it’s affected mostly security personnel and workers in the media village. They have all been quarantined. It’s not believed that any athletes are sick. In an effort to prevent its spread, more than 1200 security workers have been called off duty and replaced with 900 military personnel. Meanwhile, cleaning crews are working to disinfect all areas around the Olympic village as well as buses.
Some Olympic events have already started ahead of Friday’s Opening Ceremony.
